Conceptual illustration of an offshore pile driven through water into the seabed, with a metamaterial cushion between the impact hammer and the pile.
A cushion between hammer and pile can be designed to filter mechanical waves. Conceptual illustration inspired by Ana Vasconcelos’s published doctoral research at TU Delft. Research behind the illustration ↗

Can the structure itself help control the vibration it transmits?

Jovana Jovanova’s Mega Smart Systems & Structures group develops structures and systems whose geometry, materials or mechanisms help them adapt and perform new functions. Our collaboration connects that expertise with SSI Lab’s understanding of waves, foundations and the seabed. Ana Vasconcelos’s move from SSI Lab to doctoral research at Delft helped establish this connection.

Offshore multiphysics

We connect models of structures, water and seabed with design methods for offshore applications through the Unicamp–USP–TU Delft SPRINT project.

Metamaterials and vibration

Architected materials can change how mechanical waves travel. This common interest connects structural dynamics with strategies for reducing offshore vibration and noise.

Adaptive and bio-inspired systems

The groups share interests in compliant mechanisms, soft robotics and the interaction between a deformable structure and its surroundings.

Ana Vasconcelos’s research journey.

After her early research at LAMEC and her MSc at SSI Lab, Ana Carolina Azevedo Vasconcelos continued to TU Delft. She completed her PhD on 9 April 2025, with Dingena Schott as supervisor and Jovana Jovanova as co-supervisor.

Her thesis developed a metamaterial cushion placed between an impact hammer and an offshore monopile. Its internal resonators are designed to filter vibration during pile installation, addressing a source of underwater noise. Her trajectory connects our work on foundation dynamics with Delft’s expertise in engineered materials and offshore systems.

SPRINT: design optimization offshore

Our 2025–2027 FAPESP SPRINT project supports research exchange between Unicamp, USP and TU Delft. With Renato Picelli and Jovana Jovanova, we bring complementary methods in mechanics and design to offshore structures and develop the next stages of this collaboration.

Computational Mechanics for Sustainable Development

We jointly organized minisymposium MS079 with Jovana and Renato. It connected computational modelling with questions in renewable energy, vibration mitigation and sustainable infrastructure.
